The five mistakes we make when using the car's air conditioning

Using the air conditioning is essential in summer, but we often make mistakes that can seriously affect how it works.

Driver Hand Tuning Air Ventilation Grille

In summer we can’t go without air conditioning in the car. We have just had several days of intense heat, and it is important to drive comfortably. The DGT warns that a car with an interior temperature of 35 °C reduces the driver’s attention by 20% compared with a temperature of 25 °C. However, air conditioning requires several actions to be fully effective and to be used correctly.

There are several habits that stop this indispensable feature of the car from working properly and from doing its job as it should. Let’s review the five mistakes we commonly make when running the air conditioning that the DGT points out so that we can correct them and enjoy the cool air that the system provides in summer.

Setting the air conditioning to maximum as soon as you get into the car

This is a very common mistake and should be avoided. The best approach is to open the windows and let the interior ventilate. In this way, the interior temperature can drop several degrees before you switch on the air conditioning. One minute of ventilation is usually enough, and it prevents the system from working harder than necessary.

Having the “Recirculation” mode

Using the “Recirculation” option with the air conditioning increases the risk of the windows fogging up. This happens because of the difference in temperature between the air coming out of the vents and the interior temperature. Moreover, it will not help the temperature drop more quickly. It is better to draw in air from outside the car to avoid problems.

Not using the air conditioning at certain times of the day

There are times when people drive with the air conditioning switched off. When it is not very hot, it may be left off. When the outside temperature rises, the system will have to work harder to reach the optimal temperature. It is better to switch on the air conditioning when you start the car, even at a gentle setting so that the interior gradually adjusts to the temperature. You can increase the intensity of the air conditioning as the temperature rises to prevent it from working too hard.

Poor adjustment of the air vents

It is important to properly adjust the air vents. Correct orientation allows the air to circulate efficiently and the cabin temperature to drop evenly. Vents should not be pointed at your face; instead, try to direct them upwards and let the cold air gradually lower the temperature.

Not carrying out proper maintenance

We always forget about the air conditioning. We have every mechanical check done on the car, but we often overlook the need to inspect and replace the air filters. It is important to do this every 10,000 or 15,000 kilometres. Make sure the inspection is carried out properly and any necessary replacements are made.
