The Ford Mustang will bring back the Mach 1 name and will arrive in 2021

The Ford Mustang has earned its place in the motoring world as one of the most iconic vehicles of all time. However, the people at the oval brand know how to make their favourite child even more special, something that is possible if an essential ingredient is added to that exhilarating formula. We are referring to the Mach 1 name; a name that debuted in 1969 and quickly won over lovers of the quintessential muscle car; a name that will once again grace the body of the Mustang in 2021.

And so the pony car once again reclaims part of its history through this designation, which enjoyed such success between 1969 and 1978, the only period -apart from a stellar appearance in 2003- in which the Mustang Mach 1 was in production. Now, the American brand has decided to revive a legend and, what better way to do it than by using a legend as the foundation?

For now Ford has been discreet about sharing information on this new Mustang Mach 1, but it will arrive as the successor to the Bullitt. In addition, this variant will be offered with distinctive styling, various mechanical upgrades and a tuning setup with a clear purpose: to be more effective on the track, its natural habitat.

It won’t be as radical as the exhilarating Shelbys, but from Ford they assure us it will be a spicier and sportier variant. This will be possible thanks to various adjustments to the 5.0-litre Coyote V8, which will now produce a power output close to 500 CV, better calibrated suspension and more powerful brakes. Of course the styling will match these mechanical and dynamic improvements.

For now the camouflage covers the body of the upcoming Mustang Mach 1, a model that shows a sharper and more aggressive front end with two circular recesses that could serve as mounts for two additional headlights -a clear tribute to the original Mach 1- or to improve cooling for the V8. Meanwhile, the rear features a prominent spoiler and retains a quad exhaust layout which, at first glance, appears to have a larger tail pipe diameter, a clear sign that a better soundtrack is on its way.

The exact launch date is still unknown, but it is clear that the presence of the new Mustang Mach-E does not prevent Ford from moving forward with the development of its iconic muscle car. With this in mind, we can breathe easy knowing that we still have many years of Mustang ahead, led by the Mach 1.
