The Ford Mustang would also become a global car

The idea of the global car has already taken deep root in many brands, mostly North American ones. The advantages are obvious: it allows for a supply and assembly of parts that are all identical, rather than a different set for each market. At the same time, manufacturing would be limited to countries with cheaper labour. And, no less, the Ford Mustang is the one rumoured to become a global car too. The few fans of pony cars in Europe or Asia would no longer have to work so hard to get hold of a Mustang that isn’t an import.

There is a reason for all this. Besides the fact that Ford is another brand pushing the idea of the global car (let’s not forget the new Focus and the Fiesta), the brand’s new philosophy is not to build cars meant only for certain countries.

That is why it is said that the next generation of the Ford Mustang, due in 2014, will already be global. Will the five-litre V8 engine be a success in Europe? And how about its so radical and Americanised design? It may not appeal much in Europe, but the plan is to make some fundamental changes to satisfy customers outside the USA.

The first would be the inclusion of the V6 engine for Europe, a straightforward option since the turbocharged V6 is already part of the Mustang range. But the most striking change would be a complete redesign, in the form of an ultra-sophisticated, high-performance coupé, something along the lines of a Mustang-Nissan GT-R. The idea is more than good, and hopefully it will be confirmed in the future.
