The Ford Ranger is the best-selling pick-up in Europe, and now the PHEV version offers much more

This is the best-selling pick-up in the European market, but now the Ford Ranger is launching the plug-in hybrid version. We already knew this variant was coming, but we have more information about the two versions that will arrive, offering different trim levels, which allow the pick-up to be optimised for different types of work.

First of all, the plug-in hybrid version of the Ford Ranger uses a hybrid engine made up of a 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine which, together with an electric motor delivering 75 kW of power, gives a good sense of control over the vehicle. The ten-speed automatic gearbox helps create that feeling.

The total output of the plug-in hybrid pick-up is 281 CV and maximum torque is 697 N·m. The lithium-ion battery has a capacity of 11.8 kWh, which can be recharged from an external charger as well as through the internal combustion engine and the energy recovery system during driving. But now we have more information about the launch versions of this model.

The Pro Power Onboard system of the Ford

Designed for hard work, the Ford Ranger PHEV can use part of the battery’s energy to power external electronic devices. The Pro Power Onboard of the Ford can be configured with a 2.3 kW output to supply devices such as electric bicycles of up to 650 W and a 65 W portable fridge, for example.

If power needs are greater, a higher-output configuration, with 6.9 kW, can be selected for other electrical equipment with greater demand. This system consists of two outlets of 3.45 kW and 15 amps each, to power construction machinery if necessary.

To equip the Ford Ranger PHEV with this system and the rest of its equipment, Ford surveyed 5,000 users. Based on this information, the model has been fitted with various elements to give it all the functionality that is sought in the field, both when working and when enjoying a few days off.

The three launch versions

The Ford Ranger PHEV will be launched in three versions. The first is the Stormtrak, which offers a 10-speaker sound system, the 2.3 kW Pro Power Onboard PHEV and the Flexible Rack for the load platform. The top of the range is the Wildtrak level, which adds exclusive details for this trim. It also features heated front seats and steering wheel. It also has 360º LED lighting, which helps illuminate the entire surroundings of the pick-up.
