The fully electric Volkswagen Golf GTI will reach the market in 2026

Volkswagen, the German automotive giant, has unveiled its plans to electrify one of its most iconic models: the Golf GTI. Although the Golf 9, the next incarnation of the compact from Wolfsburg, is moving into fully electric territory, the sporty spirit of the Golf GTI will not only be preserved but enhanced with the arrival of a fully electric version in 2026.

The announcement was made through social media by Andreas Mindt, head of Design at Volkswagen. In an Instagram post, he shared an intriguing sketch showing the upcoming electric Golf GTI alongside its predecessor, marking an unprecedented transition towards electric mobility. The image evokes the evolution of the iconic model from its debut at the Munich Motor Show in 1975 to its next electric incarnation.

“The Golf GTI was first presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1975 with a production run of 5,000 units. To date, we have sold more than 2.8 million. In 2026 we will present an electric version of this iconic model,” Mindt said in his post.

The sketch, part of the concepts for the Volkswagen ID. GTI presented at the last Munich show, suggests more compact proportions, closer to the brand’s future ID.2. However, the real revolution lies in the confirmation that the electric Golf GTI will materialise in the vehicle’s ninth generation, taking advantage of the advanced SSP electric platform (Scalable Systems Platform), successor to the successful MEB found in the ID.3, ID.4 and ID.5.

A big anniversary

In 2024, Volkswagen will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Golf, presenting the evolution of the model’s eighth generation. This development will stand out for its refined visual features, innovative driver assistance systems, cutting-edge propulsion, as well as next-generation infotainment systems and software.

While we await the arrival of the Golf 9, the Golf ‘8.5‘ is on its way, a facelift of the Golf 8 scheduled for early 2024. Expectations for this update include improvements to the headlights, the infotainment system and an increase in the power of the current combustion engines. In addition, new features are anticipated for the Golf Variant, GTI and R variants, consolidating Volkswagen’s commitment to continuous innovation and adaptation to the changing demands of the market.
