The Guardia Civil intercepts the Extremaduran president's car at 170 km/h

Once again we have a case of an official vehicle caught speeding, this time the Guardia Civil has caught a Audi A8 belonging to the president of Extremadura, Guillermo Fernández Vara, driving on a motorway at 170 km/h.

The first report that came out said it was the bodyguards’ vehicle that had exceeded the limit, but it seems that in the end it was the president’s own official car. He has admitted the facts and blamed his schedule for having to travel with so little time to spare.

The good news is that at least he has admitted it, but this is far too common. Moreover, in this case he is only the president of an autonomous community, yet there have even been cases of town councillors being caught at 180 km/h in their vehicles with no apparent reason other than being in a great hurry.

To be more specific, I remember the case of the deputy mayor of Vigo and a councillor, caught at 170 km/h, who claimed a supposed danger from a vehicle driven by two people, one of them with a beard who never left the car. The most curious aspect of the case, as the article points out, is that although the fine still applies, there is an exception within road safety legislation: if bodyguards claim security reasons they may travel faster, so the fine probably doesn’t even have to be paid.
