The Honda Jazz 2020 is unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show

The Honda Jazz 2020 has been unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show. It is already the fifth generation of the Japanese city car and will be offered exclusively with hybrid powertrains.

Honda is moving resolutely towards electrification, a process that has culminated in the new Honda e, the first 100% electric vehicle from the Japanese brand. However, not all the responsibility can be placed on electric vehicles, since hybrid cars still have a lot to contribute.

The Japanese manufacturer is aware of this, which is why it has set itself the goal that all the vehicles it sells will feature some form of electrification by 2025. In line with this, the Honda Jazz 2020 has arrived, the fifth generation of the city car, which will now offer only hybrid powertrains under its bonnet.

A small MPV

The new Honda Jazz introduces a new look that is much more appealing than that of the previous generation. At the front, large headlights that resemble bulging eyes take centre stage. Its silhouette features rounded yet fairly spacious shapes, and the rear has a very straight drop, so the boot shape should be very practical.

In addition, to keep up with current trends, it will have a crossover variant called the Honda Jazz Crosstar, which will feature exterior protection, a body with greater ground clearance and new roof rails for a more adventurous look.

The Honda Jazz has always been known for its generous interior space, so it can be considered a small MPV. For this reason, the new generation has not wanted to lose this character and continues to follow the same philosophy, though with far more technology and its new state-of-the-art hybrid systems.

The cabin of the Honda Jazz also features a completely new design, thanks to a modern dashboard – an area in which the brand is already a specialist – and a generous infotainment system screen. We can also see that it comes with a digital cockpit.

At the rear, the new Honda Jazz offers its Magic Seat Seat System, which allows the seat bases to be folded up so that loading large items into the rear row is a breeze.

The Honda Jazz 2020 will use a distinctive hybrid system

The new Honda Jazz will debut the e-HEV designation for the first time, which will then be extended to the rest of its hybrid range. The propulsion system of the new city car from the brand will feature a hybrid setup made up of two motors.

Taking over from the Honda CR-V Hybrid that we recently tested, the electric motor works as the drive unit and the petrol engine acts as a generator. We can therefore say that it sits halfway between a conventional hybrid and a fully electric car.

This means that the Honda Jazz will move on the power of its electric motor, and the batteries that feed it are recharged by the generator’s operation, that is, by the petrol engine.

The manufacturer has already announced the launch date of the new Honda Jazz: it will reach dealerships in mid-2020. We also don’t yet know the price, so we will reveal these details as the company makes them public.
