The hybrid with the magic button for SEMA: Honda CR-Z Racer

Think a hybrid could never be sporty? Think again, because we have before our eyes one that is without too many substantial changes under the hood. Even though the CR-Z is not strictly a sports car, nor a racing car, the people at Honda really went to town this time.

On the outside, you’ll already be seeing it. The look suits it perfectly, and the way it looks with that colour scheme and the red lines really suits it. The white wheels undoubtedly help the CR-Z Racer look more appealing, but it has other features too, even for those of us who frown at the words “hybrid” or “electric”.

I’ve mentioned the white 17-inch wheels, and the lowered suspension should also be noted, along with the rear spoiler, which is not just for decoration but is fully functional, according to the people at Honda. But there’s more. This CR-Z Racer is not a disguised hybrid; under the bonnet, Honda has another ace up its sleeve.

The hybrid system remains, along with the 1.5 i-VTEC engine. But they have added a Borg Warner turbo, which wouldn’t be anything out of the ordinary if it weren’t for the fact that the engine works in conjunction with the hybrid system, which hasn’t stayed as it was. In other words, the lads at Honda had the excellent idea of using it as a power booster. At the touch of a button, the hybrid system delivers all available power, reaching 200 horsepower and a good torque of 175 lb-ft.

Did you like the CR-Z Racer, or do you still think a hybrid can’t go racing?
