The Insurance Institute for Highway Traffic, a US institution that for more than three decades has been putting every new model on the market through its paces, has praised the excellent occupant protection offered by the new generation of the luxury brand’s SUV, the Toyota. After a series of crash tests, the RX 450h has achieved top scores in the frontal, side, rear and rollover impact categories.

Likewise, the large amount of technology fitted to ensure the car’s safety has also received very positive comments from this independent US organisation. For example, it has rated very highly the fact that it comes with advanced stability control as standard. In addition, the pre-collision safety system (PCS) that can optionally be fitted has also worked in its favour.

This device works by detecting objects in front of the vehicle through the emission of a millimetre-wave radar, which bounces off obstacles and alerts the car to their presence. If there is a high-risk situation, the pre-collision safety system notifies the driver through a audible alert and a red warning light on the dashboard displaying “BRAKE!”.

But if the system detects that a collision will occur unavoidably, it activates the brakes and tensions the front seatbelts so that they hold the occupants more firmly. Other safety features fitted to the RX 450h include an intelligent adaptive front lighting system, a head-up display (holographic data projected onto the windscreen), an emergency brake assist system, and more.
