The MG Cyberster is now official: keep an eye on the Chinese rival to the Mazda MX-5!

MG keeps expanding its range, and by 2024 it will have the Cyberster, a two-seat electric roadster with very sporty handling that looks just as good as it sounds

At last, after various leaks and after seeing some sketches, MG has presented the MG Cyberster at the Shanghai Auto Show. The images reveal a two-seat sports car with a roadster body that is sure to generate plenty of discussion, provided the brand sticks to its approach of offering affordable cars for all audiences in this category too.

The iconic British brand, owned by the Chinese giant SAIC, has already shown what it is capable of in this new era with products such as the MG4 Electric, or the MG Marvel R. And to celebrate its centenary in 2024, there is nothing better than a model like the Cyberster. Let us recall that MG has a great tradition of convertibles, the most famous being the MGB and MGF. Its last model in this category was the MG TF, which went on sale in 2002.

A two-seat electric roadster at an affordable price

We still know little about the technical specifications of the MG Cyberster. It is a two-seat convertible about 4.5 metres long, with a fabric soft top and, as a distinguishing feature in this price and size category, scissor-type electric doors that open upwards. Other distinctive features of its bodywork, according to the brand, are the “Kammback” design originally used on competition models, with a slightly upward-curved rear. The grille incorporates an active cooling system, and the headlights extend almost to the front wheel arches, highlighting a very high waistline.

Expectations are very high, given that the MG Cyberster will compete head-on with models such as the Mazda MX-5, and that price may be one of the differentiating factors. The other is the excitement it can convey when driven: in China there are talks of two variants, with a single rear motor producing over 300 CV, or even two motors and more than 530 CV. We will see whether these are “Chinese tall tales” or whether the Cyberster really can open new horizons, as the Mazda Miata did in its day.
