Mitsubishi will present the production version of the Outlander PHEV, a plug-in SUV with a respectable range and generator-motor hybrid technology.

The first official image of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, the plug-in SUV from the brand that has been appearing in various teasers over the past few months, is now available. In addition to its hybrid configuration, the Outlander PHEV will feature permanent all-wheel drive.

The powertrain combines two electric motors, one on each axle, front and rear, together with a two-litre petrol engine that acts as a generator for the battery pack. As you will see, this is a typical setup that has become the general rule when discussing motors that are not physically connected to the wheels, but with the novelty that it will include fully automatic driving modes depending on driving conditions and the remaining battery charge.

Mitsubishi announces very moderate consumption figures, thanks to the driving modes that manage the energy used by the PHEV more efficiently. The official consumption has been announced at 1.64 L/100 km, with a more than respectable range of over 850 kilometres.

To charge the batteries we will need four and a half hours, or just half an hour with a so-called “fast” charger, plenty of time for a coffee on the way. But if time is not on our side, there is the option of charging through the petrol engine, which happens whether the vehicle is moving or not.

Official prices have not yet been disclosed, but the Outlander PHEV is estimated to cost around 40,000 euros, with availability next year. It remains to be seen whether it will reach Spain, given that the Outlander is part of the Japanese manufacturer’s offering for the peninsula, which is, for the moment, an open question.
