The Ministry of Public Works will signpost before next summer 223 accident concentration sections (TCA), 28.7% of the total, grouped into 189 road sections, whose estimated cost exceeds 6 million euros, according to the agreement signed by the Directorate General for Roads and the Directorate General for Traffic.

The selection of these TCA took into account, mainly, their higher danger index (so that it was more than four times the national average index for their road type) and also that speed was a determining factor in accidents. Consecutive TCA close to each other have been grouped into a single section to be signposted, so that the signage is more effective (avoiding redundant signs). This signposting phase is expected to be completed before summer 2009.

These actions form part of the signage agreement signed a few weeks ago by the Directorate General for Roads (DGC) of the Ministry of Public Works and the Directorate General for Traffic (DGT) of the Ministry of the Interior. Under this agreement, the DGC is responsible for placing signs and speed cameras, and the DGT will be responsible for maintaining and operating the cameras once installed.

The Agreement Commission did not consider it appropriate to initially signpost all TCA, as this is a pilot experience and therefore the impact on road users’ behaviour and the effectiveness of this measure in reducing accidents must first be analysed before it is generalised.
