The new BMW Serie 4 Coupé is in its final testing phase and promises a more sporty driving experience

The new generation of the BMW Serie 4 Coupé is in the last phase of its development before its presentation, and gives us a preview of what awaits us

The BMW Serie 4 Coupé is very close to completing its current stage to begin another with a new generation. In fact, if coronavirus safety measures are met, its presentation should be secured for early summer. For now we must make do with the images released by BMW, in which we can see it covered in thick camouflage, but luckily they give us some very interesting small details.

The images accompanying these lines, besides introducing us to the new BMW Serie 4 Coupé, serve to confirm, on the part of the German brand, the start of the final testing phase after having passed the tests carried out at the winter test centre in Arjeplog and on several circuits such as Miramas in France or the legendary Nordschleife of the Nürburgring, among others, to finally carry out the last necessary chassis adjustments on the motorways and rural roads near Munich.

Until the day of its presentation arrives to reveal more specific data, BMW gives us a preview of a Serie 4 Coupé with excellent dynamic and aerodynamic behaviour but also a daring styling, with the sole aim of providing a greater difference from the Serie 3. In this last aspect they have undoubtedly succeeded, because the spy photos have revealed a front end in which the double kidney grille stands out even more, provoking some criticism from certain fans of the brand, which has also served to generate greater anticipation for its presentation.

Compared with the new Serie 3 Saloon, the next generation of the BMW Serie 4 Coupé has sought to differentiate itself with more sporty lines, as shown by an improved drag coefficient of 0.015, but also with a body that is lowered by 57 millimetres, resulting in a centre of gravity that sits 21 millimetres closer to the ground, to which must be added the negative camber on the front wheels and a rear axle 23 mm wider. With these characteristics the new BMW Serie 4 Coupé will gain a great deal in dynamics, also considerably increasing its stability and agility.

But this sporty character will not be at odds with the comfort that characterises the vehicles of the German brand, so we will find a BMW Serie 4 Coupé that will also be perfectly suitable for everyday use and long journeys. The dampers also adopt the travel function used in the new Serie 3, offering continuously variable and progressive damping control that adapts according to the spring’s travel. This will not only improve comfort but also when driving sportily.

The flagship of the sporty character of the new BMW Serie 4 Coupé will be the M440i xDrive Coupé version, which will use the characteristic six-cylinder BMW M engine producing 374 CV, combined with 48 V mild-hybrid technology, which will help contain both consumption and emissions while also providing an extra 11 CV of power during acceleration. This engine will be linked to an eight-speed Steptronic automatic gearbox that will intelligently distribute torque to all four wheels thanks to the xDrive system, together with the M Sport differential, although the rear axle will remain the star of the show. Braking will be handled by the powerful M Sport brake system and, as standard, it will be fitted with 18-inch alloy wheels shod with mixed-size tyres.
