Taking advantage of improvements to its hybrid system, the new Ford Mondeo Hybrid, which will be built in Almusafes, will also offer a Sportbreak variant.

Hybrid propulsion is becoming popular at a rapid pace. And at Ford they know they were not at the forefront of this category with their Mondeo Hybrid. Now, the oval-badged brand announces that the new Ford Mondeo Hybrid will arrive in 2019 with an improved powertrain. And as an important novelty, for the first time there will also be a Mondeo Hybrid in Sportbreak version.

Among the electrification plans for its range, Ford envisages the launch of up to 16 fully electric cars by 2022.

The new Ford Mondeo Hybrid features a 2.0 petrol engine with Atkinson cycle and an electric motor. The Atkinson cycle engine differs from a conventional petrol engine because it takes advantage of a high compression ratio, achieved by shortening the compression stroke relative to the expansion stroke, through a delayed closing of the intake valve, which modifies the gas flow in the intake manifold. For its part, the electric motor can assist the petrol engine, recover energy during braking to store it in a lithium-ion battery located behind the seats, and propel the vehicle on its own over very short distances and at low speeds, for example when setting off again in urban traffic, or when driving through a residential area.

Built in Valencia alongside the rest of the Mondeo range

Ford announces a power output of 187 CV for the Mondeo Hybrid, which is transmitted to the wheels through a continuously variable CVT gearbox developed by the brand itself. The announced homologated average consumption is 4.4 l/100 km, with CO2 emissions of 101 g/km, figures that could rise slightly with final homologation under the WLTP cycle.

The Ford Mondeo Hybrid is the first car with this technology built by Ford in Europe, at the Almusafes (Valencia) plant, alongside the rest of the Mondeo range. The brand plans to invest around 9,400 million euros in electrifying its range, and intends to launch 16 one hundred percent electric vehicles by 2022, when its range will include a total of 40 vehicles with some form of electrification.
