The Honda Prelude returns as a hybrid coupé in 2026, combining advanced technology with electrified powertrains, sporty design and the innovative S+ Shift system.

The Honda Prelude returns to make history. The legendary sports model that bowed out in 2000 after five generations comes back in 2026 as a hybrid coupé with new electrified powertrains, and with the innovative “S+ Shift” technology as its biggest selling point. Honda aims to combine the legacy of its past with the technology of the future to redefine the pleasure of driving.

The Prelude hybrid arrives at a significant moment for Honda, which is celebrating a quarter of a century leading the development of hybrid technologies. From the revolutionary Insight of 1999, the first hybrid mass-produced in Europe, to today’s fully electrified range, Honda has paved the way towards sustainability. The new Prelude will continue this trajectory as a showcase of efficiency, innovation and driving fun.

What is S+ Shift?

The Honda “S+ Shift” technology is the key to the appeal of the new Prelude. It is a system designed to simulate gear changes and sounds typical of a conventional transmission.

With a dedicated button on the centre console, “S+ Shift” not only optimises engine revs but also synchronises dynamic sounds with the simulated gear changes, all accompanied by interactive digital gauges. According to Honda, this system is designed to “stimulate the body and mind” of the driver, offering an experience that connects man and machine like never before.

Full hybrid powertrain

The new Prelude will be equipped with the full hybrid e:HEV system from Honda, consisting of a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and two electric motors. This system is already found in models such as the Civic and the CR-V, and allows automatic switching between electric, hybrid and combustion modes, ensuring maximum efficiency and low emissions.

Unlike a conventional automatic gearbox, the Prelude will use a clutch that connects or disconnects the engine depending on driving conditions, maintaining the smoothness and precision characteristic of Honda hybrids.

Honda elegance with hybrid DNA

Although Honda has not yet revealed the final design, the Prelude is expected to share its platform with models such as the Civic and the CR-V, adapted for a sportier configuration. With its coupé silhouette and an optimised chassis setup, the Prelude promises to stand out for both its performance and its style.

The combination of fluid aerodynamics and advanced technological details will make this model as visually appealing as it is efficient on the road.

With this new launch, Honda aims to attract both sports car enthusiasts and drivers looking for an efficient and sustainable vehicle. The ability to switch between driving modes ensures that the Prelude will not only be exciting on open roads, but also practical for everyday use.

Price and availability

The Honda Prelude hybrid will first arrive in the United States at the end of 2025, followed by its European launch in early 2026. Although the price has not yet been announced, Honda promises that this sports coupé will be competitive within the premium hybrid segment.
