The new Land Rover Defender shows its face earlier than expected

Land Rover is about to unveil the new Defender, but thanks to a leak we have been able to see its design without any disguise.

The off-road segment is under pressure from all sides due to the rise of SUVs, a class of vehicles that arrives determined to undermine the purest 4x4s. However, some brands have managed to create a healthy coexistence between both worlds, with Land Rover being a clear example of this. The Defender, together with the Mercedes-Benz, has been one of those pioneers of the segment that has remained faithful to its essence since its beginnings, but in its new generation it arrives determined to introduce important changes. Until now, the English company had shown countless hints and test mules of its quintessential off-roader, but today we have seen its image without any kind of camouflage.

During the almost 68 years the previous Defender was in production, Land Rover managed to keep its DNA intact despite the various technological adaptations the model underwent. However, three years after production ended, the English firm has decided to take a risk and drastically modify the model.

Despite the clear retro air still present in the Land Rover 4×4, the designers have drawn on various patterns used for its sibling models in the range, resulting in a much more modern and current ensemble. The boxy shape it features can be read as a clear nod to its ancestors, but the front and side continue to exude a contemporary air thanks to features typical of today’s times.

This leak has been possible thanks to the filming of the latest James Bond movie, in which the new Defender will play a significant role. While filming, an automotive enthusiast took the opportunity to capture the English 4×4 before its official presentation, allowing all of us to witness the aesthetic attributes of this new generation.

For now, few details have been revealed by Land Rover, but everything points to its off-road capability remaining what is expected of a 4×4 like the Defender. Mechanically, we could expect several diesel engines and even some future hybrid or electric variant, with the aim of offering a perfect blend of efficient vehicle and capability off the tarmac.

The upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show could be the venue chosen by the English brand to premiere the new Defender, and 2020 the year that would mark the start of its production. Either way, Land Rover is already fine-tuning the final details to launch one of its most acclaimed offspring onto the market, and which is poised to mark a before and after with this new generation.
