The new Porsche 911 Speedster could arrive sooner than expected
After its appearance before the public at Goodwood, it increasingly seems clear that Porsche is going to put the 911 Speedster Concept into series production. We could see it before the end of next year.
When Porsche unveiled the 911 Speedster Concept as part of its celebrations for the brand’s 70th anniversary, it already hinted that the idea was to anticipate a future production version for 2019, but that nothing had been confirmed. The moment we saw it, we always thought the decision had already been made… even before the prototype was presented.

The latest rumours to surface after the appearance of the 911 Speedster Concept at the Goodwood Festival of Speed suggest that this special version of the “nine-eleven” could be ready in production form as early as the next Los Angeles Auto Show or the Paris Motor Show, during the last quarter of 2019. A car that, mechanically, “borrows” much from the 911 GT3, on which it is based. This means the engine will be the 4-litre naturally aspirated unit with at least 500 CV of power, although it remains to be seen whether, for the Speedster, Porsche will decide to offer the PDK dual-clutch gearbox as an alternative to the six-speed manual.

The new 911 Speedster would be the third generation of this model, which debuted in 1992 at the Paris Motor Show, based on the 964-series Porsche 911, with a 3.6 engine producing 250 CV. Later, the 997-series 911s also had Speedster versions. Of course, the first Porsche Speedster came about even earlier, based on the first model from the Zuffenhausen marque: the legendary Porsche 356 Speedster.

As in previous generations, the Porsche 911 Speedster would follow the formula of a two-seat cabin with a shorter windscreen and a fairing covering the area where the two rear seats would go. Nor would it be built in large volumes. While 930 units of the first 911 Carrera 2 Speedster were produced, and 2,000 of the 997 series, this new generation could see that last figure reduced. Some are already pointing to a limited edition of a very special number: 1,948, the year the brand was founded.
