The new signage for electric charging stations arrives

The DGT has just unveiled the signage that will indicate the type of fuel, battery charging and automotive gas refuelling available on the roads

The presence of electric vehicle charging stations is becoming increasingly common. We know there is a shortage of this type of infrastructure, but new stations are opening every day. For that reason, they need to be signposted and users need to be given all the information required to know where to find one, using a system similar to the one used for traditional petrol stations.

These signs are designed to indicate the proximity of an electric car charging point. The different types of refuelling will be shown on these signs, so drivers of conventional cars will still know what fuel is available to them, while those driving battery-powered cars will also be able to see the charging options they have.

Until now there was no official sign marking these charging points, so the DGT has worked to give this information to users. The sign is universal and will allow all users to identify the services offered at the stations and to know whether they offer different types of refuelling.

These signs will not only mark battery charging points for electrified cars, but will also show LPG refuelling points, another of the fuels that has been added to the offering at service stations. This signage therefore comes in several forms, which are easy to recognise.

The first sign provides information on whether the service station offers conventional fuel, with a black post and an electric vehicle charging point, in green. The second indicates a battery charging post, with the green post sign.

A third sign, intended for gas refuelling points for automotive use, features an icon similar to the conventional fuel one, but in blue. All battery charging points will soon be on an official map showing the location of each of them. Unofficial maps already record them, but the one that will appear in May will be the official one, produced by the government.

We know that most, if not all, battery-powered cars have an app that helps locate these charging points in real time, but the reinforcement of the signs approved by the DGT will help drivers become aware of their presence on the road.
