The new Toyota GR Supra now has a price
The new Toyota GR Supra has captured the attention of enthusiasts of exclusive cars and, given its price, that is how it will be
The wait has been long, in fact, it will be after summer 2019 when the new Toyota GR Supra finally goes on sale; specifically, from October the first units of a car that is already accepting orders and has an established RRP will begin to arrive. But let us start from the beginning.
The rebirth of an icon
A Toyota GR Supra that takes the GR initials from the department in charge of its development, the same division that handles the competition vehicles of the brand, Gazoo Racing, and that launches its own line of cars sold for use on ordinary roads.
Born from the German-Japanese alliance between BMW and Toyota, something not everyone likes, but which, regardless, must be judged in light of the reduction of manufacturing costs for new cars, related, yes, but with completely distinct identities.
That is why this new Toyota GR Supra arrives to satisfy the aspirations of customers who enjoy spirited and emotional driving, with the character that Japanese sports cars tend to incorporate into their DNA. A genetic heritage that, in this case, is predetermined by a history, that of the Toyota Supra, which gave rise to an icon of motoring.
That is why the configuration of this launch version is, at its core, motivating: a new car that features a three-litre six-cylinder inline, turbocharged engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, sending power to the rear wheels, and delivering figures worthy of a high-performance sports car (a power output of 340 CV and a brutal torque of 495 Nm), with a 0 to 100 km/h time of just 4.1 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.
The weight balance, in a 50:50 distribution, a low centre of gravity, a chassis made from lightweight yet resistant materials, the wheelbase, an electronic limited-slip differential and an exhaust system that guarantees an addictive sound, all ensure GT-like sensations: agile, powerful and sporty.
The bodywork, made of aluminium and lightweight steel, has been one of the essential points in the conception of this car. Since the appearance of the concept car, the Toyota FT-1 in 2014, which announced the very firm intention to launch what is today the fifth generation of the Toyota GR Supra, the lines have sought to capture the image of its ancestors.
The dimensions of the 2020 Toyota GR Supra are set at 4,380 millimetres in length, 1,865 in width and 1,295 in height.
In addition, the braking system, effective and powerful, together with variable adaptive suspension with a racing touch, complete a well-rounded product, a car that comes to renew its iconic aura, a reference for the 21st century.
Inside the new Toyota GR Supra
Inside, the architecture of a two-seater coupé has, in the roof, divided into two domes over the occupants, and in the seats, its most attractive features, together with the possibility of including different colour combinations in the upholstery, trim and other inserts.
A cabin that inherits the layout and many of the instrument elements of the new BMW Z4, such as the multimedia and climate control screen, something that has been heavily criticised but, unsurprisingly, given that both sports cars are built in the same Austrian plant in Graz.
The Toyota GR Supra is sold with a single trim level, which includes as standard equipment an 8.8-inch multimedia screen, navigation, sport seats with electric adjustment, heating and Alcantara upholstery… The price of the Toyota GR Supra also includes LED headlights, 19-inch forged alloy wheels and driver assistance systems.
It also comes with the GR Supra Safety Sense+ package, which includes driving assistance systems such as the daytime Pre-Collision System with pedestrian and cyclist detection, Lane Departure Alert with steering assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Intelligent High Beam Control, Road Sign Assist, Blind Spot Monitor with Lane Departure Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and intelligent parking sensors with automatic braking.
The range and price of the Toyota GR Supra
Although this Toyota GR Supra will initially be sold in Spain with the three-litre turbo engine, two other versions will be manufactured for other markets below it, initially a 340 CV Supra named Toyota GR Supra RZ. These more modest variants are yet to be confirmed for the Spanish market.
The entry-level Toyota GR Supra, the Toyota GR Supra SZ, will feature a four-cylinder engine of 1,998 cubic centimetres and will also rely on the twin-scroll system, producing 197 CV. Above it, the Toyota GR Supra SZ-R, which will share its mechanics with the SZ, will have 258 CV. And finally, the Toyota Supra RZ is a six-cylinder of 2,998 cc with 340 CV.
The weight of the Toyota GR Supra with the two-litre engine is set at 1,410 kg, while the three-litre version exceeds that figure by more than 100 kg: 1,510.
The price of the Toyota GR Supra for Spain is 69,900 euros and, through Toyota Fleet Mobility, it is possible to arrange a renting deal with a monthly fee of 1,250 euros, a financial product that includes maintenance, possible repairs, tyre changes, roadside assistance, a replacement vehicle and management of fines, compulsory insurance and taxes.
