California Volkswagen Range / versions
The new Volkswagen California T6.1 is already on show
The camper segment has reason to celebrate, because images of the new Volkswagen California T6.1 have already appeared, a model that has earned its reputation on its own merits.
Not long ago we learned about the latest update to the new Volkswagen Transporter and Multivan in their T6.1 version, and all that remained was to see their more adventurous version, the new Volkswagen California.
Well, the first sketches have now reached us of what will be the final version of the brand’s legendary model. The Volkswagen California T6.1 will bring new features in terms of design (adopting the characteristic front end of the brand’s new models), equipment and engines.
The new Volkswagen California is the last version to be renewed
Not long ago we met the Volkswagen Grand California, a true yacht on wheels available from 72,000 euros. Following this launch and the updates to its commercial and passenger-transport sister models, the version of the camper currently on the market was starting to fall into the shadows.
For this reason, the new version changes especially at the front, adopting the brand image that the Volkswagen Touareg debuted last year. The new Volkswagen California T6.1 therefore gets new full LED headlights and the large grille that characterises the marque. In addition, the bumpers have been completely redesigned and there are new wheel designs. As has been usual until now, there will be specific designs for the Beach and Ocean trims.
As we said before, what we have are design sketches, but it is easy to get an idea if we combine this with the photos the brand released a few months ago of the Volkswagen Multivan T6.1.
The new Volkswagen California will be much more technological
Just like the latter, the new Volkswagen California T6.1 will mount a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a touchscreen to operate the 9.2-inch infotainment system. Thanks to the integration of these new elements, the German camper increasingly resembles the brand’s passenger cars. Its technological equipment also helps, including a 4G internet connection and compatibility with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Another novelty in this important update is the new dashboard design, which was necessary to fit the large screens and the new air vents. In addition, the new Volkswagen California will have a complete range of driver-assistance and safety systems: lane keeping assist, side protection alert and trailer assist are some of these elements.
As for engines, it is most likely that they will be shared with the rest of the versions, that is, with the Transporter and the Multivan. This means that the new Volkswagen California will mount the 2.0 TDI engine. This powerplant has been tuned to offer four power levels: 90, 110, 150 and 199 hp. As for transmission, it may be the 7-speed DSG automatic or the classic 6-speed manual, and it can also be combined with the 4Motion all-wheel-drive system.
As for its camper-specific equipment, no major changes are expected compared with the generation it replaces. Therefore, depending on the chosen trim, it will include a kitchen, dining area or the pop-up roof.
Volkswagen has not yet published its selling price or the exact date of market launch, although it has revealed that its official presentation will be at the end of August at the Düsseldorf Motor Show.
