The new Volvo XC60 will be fully electric
The next generation of the Volvo XC60 will be fully electric and would enter production in 2024.

The next generation of the Volvo XC60 will be fully electric and could reach the market in 2024. The Swedish brand is celebrating a great 2021 but does not want things to stop there. As we told you a few weeks ago, Volvo will switch to electricity very soon and to achieve this goal, it is collaborating with Northvolt, a Swedish battery company as well.
This collaboration will result in the creation of more sustainable batteries to suit the upcoming Volvo and Polestar ranges. The first model to receive the future sustainable batteries will be the Volvo XC60, which received an update a few months ago. This means we will have to wait at least two years to meet the electric Volvo XC60. Actually, not that long, because 2024 is the chosen date for the mid-size SUV to enter production.

The Volvo XC60 will be fully electric
Before the model reaches production, the 50/50 joint venture between Volvo and Northvolt will make possible the construction of a research and development centre in Sweden. Everything points to it potentially starting operations during the next year, 2022, and its aim is to “leverage the battery expertise of both companies and develop state-of-the-art battery cells and vehicle integration technologies”.
The joint company, Volvo and Northvolt, will also establish a new clean energy factory in Europe with the potential capacity to produce up to 50 gigawatt-hours (GWh) per year. Production is scheduled to begin two years after the launch of the electric Volvo XC60, so the Swedish brand aims to acquire 15 GWh of battery cells per year from the existing Northvolt Ett battery production facility in Skellefteå, Sweden, starting in 2024.

For now, we will have to wait a little longer to learn more details about the future 100% electric Volvo range, will it change completely? What we do know is that the Volvo XC60 will be the first 100% electric model from the Swedish brand.
