The new Volvo XC90 undergoes its first recall

The second generation of the Volvo XC90 has only just started to go on sale in some markets, but as of this week it joins the list of cars that must go to the workshop. According to the Swedish manufacturer, around two hundred units of the new SUV, none of them Spanish since deliveries here will not begin until June, may have a potential fault in the side airbags of the front seats.

The problem lies in a wiring harness integrated into them, whose assembly has occasionally been faulty. This incorrect installation carries the risk that its insulation may be damaged and, therefore, that the side airbags do not deploy in the event of a crash. Volvo clarifies in this regard that there is no possibility of the opposite happening, that is, that they inflate by mistake suddenly.

Affected units show the problem on the instrument cluster with the corresponding warning indicator. The Gothenburg brand states that it has not been informed of any accident related to this cause.

It also guarantees that the units still awaiting delivery to their future owners will be analysed in order to check whether the same happens to them and, if so, fix it before they reach the dealerships. In addition, Volvo says it has verified that the supplier of this part has taken new quality control measures to prevent additional defects.

On the positive side, the company detected it very early in relation to the model’s launch, so much so that only a couple of hundred cars have been affected. The negative aspect is that this is no trivial matter, since side airbags could fail to deploy, a very serious issue for a manufacturer considered one of the greatest promoters of automotive safety.
