The next Mitsubishi Lancer EVO could be a super hybrid

When Mitsubishi announced the sad news that the Lancer was being discontinued, we noted that the EVO would continue to be sold in Japan and the US. The Japanese brand had considered a hybrid powertrain (it has even been said it could be a diesel-hybrid), a version that would reach the market in about two or three years.

Not only would a hybrid be confirmed for the famous new-generation Lancer EVO, but it would be something… serious. It is rumoured to produce around 500 horsepower and to have a hybrid powertrain derived from the Mitsubishi MiEV Evolution II that has competed at Pikes Peak. Like many hybrids today, the new EVO could also run on electric power alone.

It seems that the target Mitsubishi has in mind with this hybrid is no longer the Subaru Impreza, but will go much further, towards the Nissan GT-R. Drawing on the all-wheel-drive technology of earlier generations and on the look of the Mitsubishi Lancer hatchback, which is no small thing. But returning to the hybrid powertrain, it is said it will integrate a newly designed 2-litre engine, together with two electric motors of 80 horsepower each.

The exterior design of the new EVO could be that of the Mitsubishi Concept-RA shown at the Detroit Motor Show a few years ago. At the end of 2007, it was said the Concept-RA would have a SST dual-clutch transmission and S-AWD all-wheel drive; however, that concept had a turbodiesel engine, whereas now everything will depend on whether the brand’s PHEV hybrid technology reaches more markets and sells more than it does now.
