The next Renault Mégane will arrive in 2023 despite the rumours

Over the last few weeks, rumours have raised alarm bells in the automotive sector following a rather unfortunate interpretation of one of the most popular and common cars on our streets and roads, the Renault Mégane.

Thus, various media outlets claimed that, with this fourth generation, Renault would bring the end of the flagship compact of the French maker, denying the replacement of one of its best-selling cars, both within the manufacturer’s overall range and as one of the models that regularly appears in the monthly and annual best-seller rankings.

Be that as it may, the future demise of a key model was merely an interpretation drawn from the statements of Laurens van den Acker, Head of Design at Renault, whose words about the pressure faced by a model as important as the Renault Mégane. Renault Mégane 1999Indeed, this is a compact car that, like its rivals, such as the all-powerful Volkswagen Golf, whose production in 2019 saw its sibling the Volkswagen Tiguan overtake that of the “forty-something”, or the Seat León, the best-selling car in Spain in 2018 and 2019, sees its sales eroded by the relentless growth of the ever-expanding catalogue of crossovers flooding the market that directly target traditional MPVs, saloons and compacts.

From here, the French publication L’Argus speculates that the concept behind the Renault Mégane could be reinvented, much as happened with the MPV Peugeot 3008, which mutated into the new Peugeot 3008 SUV, and that Renault is working on a fifth generation of a car that bears its name but forces us to rethink our idea of it.

Likewise, it is expected that the new-generation Renault Mégane will do without diesel engines, opting, among the hydrocarbon fuels, only for petrol and expanding its electrified variants, based on the CMF-C platform. Currently, the engineering teams laying the foundations of the new car refer to it as the ‘BFN project’, which would see the light of day as a production car in 2023.
