The largest saloon from the Czech brand is at least two years away from receiving a new generation. This was recently confirmed by Skoda executive Winfried Vahland in an interview with the British magazine Autocar. The Superb was facelifted in spring 2013, but the next model will bring many important changes and will still require more development time.

Vahland stated that the brand intends for the Superb to remain the model that tops the range for another ten years. That is to say, the large SUV being developed for Skoda would not replace the saloon for the time being. The next generation of the saloon will be built on the modular MQB platform of Volkswagen and will share up to 50 % of its components with the Passat.

A major novelty of the new Superb will be that the saloon body will drop the distinctive double-opening boot known as TwinDoor. This allowed the user to open it either like a three-box saloon or like a hatchback. Vahland justified this decision by arguing that it was too expensive in terms of production costs.

What will be retained are the generous dimensions that almost all Skoda models tend to have compared with rivals in their respective segments. The model will represent a design and engineering “revelation“, as Vahland stated in the interview. It will also aim for greater aerodynamic efficiency and reduced weight, which it will achieve with measures such as fitting a two-litre four-cylinder engine as the top of the range. In this way, the 3.6 V6 FSI will not continue in the Superb’s line-up.
