The Nissan Ariya concludes its Pole-to-Pole adventure: 30,000 kilometres of travel

This Nissan Ariya began its pole-to-pole adventure several months ago and has already travelled across the Americas over more than 30,000 kilometres.

At the beginning of 2023, an adventure began that would take the Nissan Ariya around the entire globe, from Pole to Pole. The challenge was undertaken by Chris and Julie Ramsey, a married couple of adventurers who set out to travel the planet from the North Pole to the South Pole at the wheel of this electric vehicle. Now, several months later, their journey has come to an end and, although the difficulties have been many, they are happy with the outcome of the experience.

The initial estimate was to cover 27,000 kilometres, although in the end the two adventurers faced more than 30,000 kilometres. The journey began at the magnetic North Pole and continued through North America, heading south. They passed through Central America, reached South America, and the final destination of the trip was the magnetic South Pole.

A journey in an electric car

The challenge was to demonstrate that a journey of this kind could be completed in an electric car. Concern over the range of electric cars is one of the issues that must be overcome for electric vehicles to achieve the adoption needed for the electric transition that is being awaited, and these efforts show that it can be done well.

To fulfil its mission, the Nissan Ariya that undertook the challenge was equipped with solar panels to charge where there are no plugs, as well as a wind turbine, which also helps to charge the battery. Neither the battery nor the motor were modified, so it is the same configuration as the production models.

This means it has a battery with a capacity of 87 kWh and a motor that delivers a power output of 290 kW, that is, 394 CV. To be able to move freely across different points of the route, several modifications were made to the suspension. Some parts of the bodywork were reinforced, and it should be noted that the e-4ORCE all-wheel-drive control system is also the one fitted to the commercial version of the model.

The 39-inch tyres also help it cope with the most demanding terrain, so although it has not been a walk in the park, it was accomplished with considerable ease.

To keep moving during the journey, the two adventurers made use of any plug within reach, from domestic sockets to chargers they found in urban areas. The challenge was successfully completed, which proves the capabilities of this Nissan model when it comes to taking on demanding tasks, and shows that electric cars are suitable for everyday use without problems.
