The Nissan Micra is back, and this time in a fully electric version

With the launch of the new generation of the Micra, Nissan aims to meet the growing demand for electric city cars at a fairly affordable price

The segment of electric vehicles designed for urban use and at a fairly affordable price is not going to lack contenders in the near future, and Nissan could not miss the party. According to a recent report, the Japanese manufacturer will unveil a new generation of the legendary Nissan Micra later this year. A model that will stand out for being exclusively electric and also low-cost.

Nissan has been quietly developing this project for several years, and the company’s management believes the time has come to reveal it.

One of the objectives of Nissan’s current strategy is to create a new generation of electric vehicles while achieving a significant reduction in production costs. To do so, the Japanese manufacturer hopes to reach agreements with other manufacturers, such as Renault, in order to create a shared platform. To carry out this strategy, Nissan is already making a major investment that will extend over the next five years.

The Micra will not, however, be the only electric model from the Japanese manufacturer we will see soon. Nissan intends to put five new electric models on the market in a short period of time. Three of them will come from the company’s Sunderland plant in the United Kingdom: the Juke, the Qashqai and the successor to the LEAF. All of them fully electric.

Nevertheless, as mentioned, the first will be the new Micra, whose official presentation will take place later this year. In this way, the company aims to meet the growing demand for this type of vehicle with electric propulsion and accessible to a larger number of potential customers.

What can we expect from the Japanese manufacturer’s new electric city car?

Although so far very few technical details about the future electric Micra are known, everything suggests it will be based on the AmpR platform that the new Renault 5 will also use. The city model from the French manufacturer will offer a range of around 400 km, using a 52 kWh battery pack. These figures should be quite similar to those found in the specification sheet of the new electric Nissan Micra.

It also seems quite likely that the most affordable version of the Nissan Micra will feature a battery pack with a smaller capacity, of around 40 kWh, which would allow it to travel about 300 km on a single charge.

At Nissan, management believes that by focusing on the marketing of a wide variety of electric models, most of them at fairly affordable prices, they will manage to bring their cost in line with that of combustion-engine models within just a few years, even before the current decade ends. The Japanese manufacturer also plans to differentiate itself from the competition through the use of new battery technologies, including solid-state batteries. In fact, the company has already begun building a new battery plant where solid-state batteries will be produced.
