The Opel Insignia will receive a new diesel engine with two sequential turbochargers

Future diesel editions of the Opel Insignia will receive a diesel engine with two sequential turbochargers, which operate in two activation phases depending on the engine speed.

The Opel Insignia will receive a new and quite interesting diesel powertrain, far removed from the diesel option we had until now: the two-litre Ecotec engine, though just as closely aligned with the concept of fuel economy and reduced emissions of harmful gases for the environment.

It is an engine with two sequential turbochargers and two operating phases. One turbo is slightly smaller than the other, but both complement each other and work alone or together depending on the engine’s power demand. At low revs and during initial acceleration, the smaller turbo is the one working, while at medium revs (above 3,000 RPM) both turbos come into action. Under full-throttle acceleration, the work is handed over to the larger turbo of the pair.

Some of the emissions and performance figures disclosed for this engine are as follows: an emissions level of 129 g/km of CO2 and fuel consumption of 4.9 l/100 km. This engine could achieve an acceleration of 8.7 seconds to 100 km/h.

According to Opel, the estimated price for a diesel Insignia equipped with this engine is around €33,000, with four-wheel drive available as an option.
