The Porsche Cayenne celebrates its twentieth anniversary
The Porsche Cayenne saved the Stuttgart brand itself, which is why, alongside the Porsche 911, it is one of the most revered vehicles.

The Porsche Cayenne is celebrating, as the large SUV from the Stuttgart brand marks its twentieth anniversary. It is such a beloved model for the German manufacturer that it has even been described as the “successor to the Porsche 959″. Ferdinand Porsche, in 1989, already stated that “if we build an off-road model to our quality standards, and it has a Porsche crest on the front, people will buy it”.
As unlikely as it may sound, it has been a true reality: the Cayenne saved Porsche at a time when the legendary Porsche 911 was in trouble. As a result, the Porsche Cayenne became a true flagship while the Stuttgart brand discovered how to keep its sports car customers happy.
Porsche’s statements still hold true today, as the German brand’s SUV comfortably outsold the 911 in 2021. “The Porsche Cayenne has always been a great attraction for our brand: it has attracted many new customers and fans from around the world to Porsche over the last 20 years,” said Detlev von Platen, member of the Executive Board for Sales and Marketing.

The manufacturer has even claimed that the Cayenne practically saved the brand: “It quickly became clear to management that the legendary 911 and the new mid-engined model alone could not steer the company toward a secure future. Plans for a ‘third Porsche’ began to take shape.” That third model would eventually become the Cayenne, and then it would share its platform with the Volkswagen Touareg.
The Cayenne also introduced a feature that many modern Porsche cars now take for granted: the Porsche Active Suspension Management system. The brand’s active damper setup is now a standard element across its entire model range, and a much-loved feature among 911 enthusiasts. It is not very common for technology from an SUV to filter down to the company’s high-end sports car, but that is exactly what happened.
Today, the Cayenne range spans a number of eco-friendly and performance trim levels, and the hybrid was launched in 2014. The Cayenne is a staple at many dealerships, despite its strong performance and off-road credentials. Congratulations to the Porsche Cayenne, here’s to another 20 years!
