The refreshed Tesla Model Y

Tesla does not seem willing to waste time given the large number of customers who may be delaying the purchase of a Model Y while they wait for the much-anticipated refresh of this compact SUV

If you live in any European city, for several weeks now you have increasingly been seeing one of the new Model 3 “Highland” on the street. The American manufacturer announced this major refresh of its compact electric saloon last September, with the intention of starting deliveries shortly afterwards in both Europe and China, since all the units currently sold of this model come from the Shanghai Gigafactory.

The arrival on the market of the new Model 3 “Highland” then left a question hanging in the air among all fans of the American brand. When would the current Model Y’s turn come?

Tesla announced a slight refresh of the interior of the Model Y built in Shanghai in October, but it was more than clear that this move by the company was nothing more than an attempt to prevent customer interest in its compact electric SUV from dropping too much until the launch of what was to come. Around that same time, some rumours already spoke of the future Model Y “Juniper“, with a clear resemblance to and all the improvements of the Model 3 “Highland“, but obviously in SUV form.

If you were waiting for the new Model Y, you will have less time to save

Although those early rumours indicated that the Model Y “Juniper” would probably not arrive until late 2024 at best, or even early 2025, a new report now claims that the long-awaited refresh of the American manufacturer’s compact electric SUV could reach the European market -and the Chinese one- much sooner than we expected.

According to this report, Tesla has already begun preparations in a section of the Shanghai plant, with the intention of starting series production of the new Model Y around mid-2024. This means that, roughly speaking, around the end of the summer we could probably already see the first units on European streets and roads, thus bringing its market launch forward by about six months compared with the earliest rumours we have on record about this Model Y refresh.

This same report also mentions that Tesla could already have a first batch of refreshed Model Y units after the New Year holidays. Although it probably refers to the Chinese New Year, which is celebrated in February. These units would also be test units not intended for final customers, as is customary before a new model is launched on the market. In any case, if this is indeed the case, it would not be surprising if around March or April some images of these units carrying out tests began to leak out, which would confirm that this report is indeed accurate.
