The Renault Twizy: believe it or not, the best-selling electric car in Europe

The Renault Twizy boasts of being the best-selling electric car in Europe in its first four months on the market, with 7,000 units.

A huge effort is made to push electric cars, and one knows from experience the enormous resources each brand deploys at every launch. That is why Renault Spain has highlighted the achievement reached with the Renault Twizy, the best-selling electric car in Europe this year.

Jesús Presa, Communications Director of Renault, has said that Spain is one of the four countries where the Twizzy has had the greatest acceptance. Of all of them, the leader is Switzerland, where more than 300 units have been delivered in just two months. In Spain, 800 Twizzy units have been sold since its presentation.

Renault also holds the second position among best-selling electric cars, since the Kangoo Z.E. has occupied that position so far in 2012. The diamond brand is becoming a benchmark for electric mobility, joining forces with Nissan and its Leaf model.

With the Twizy, some caveats must be made. One must consider that it is a city car and that, although its unattractive design and its alleged uselessness “as a car” make the purchase of this two-seater by more than 7,000 people across Europe hard to understand, being an urban vehicle makes it an ideal two-seater for driving through areas closed to other traffic, as is customary in some European cities. It is also eligible for purchase subsidies and pays lower road tax in almost all countries.

But let’s get to the point: Is the Twizzy a car in the broad sense of the word? I don’t think so. A Vespa would be an alternative I would prefer over a Twizy, but to each their own…

Es el único vehículo eléctrico al que puede acceder el pueblo medio. Los demás suponen un gran sobrecoste.
