The Subaru Levorg Prototype STI Sport is the estate we need

The Subaru Levorg Prototype STI Sport is presented as proof that estate bodies still have a place, even if only in Japan

In a world dominated by the trends that marketing and advertising departments dictate, the Subaru Levorg Prototype STI Sport would be something like that Japanese soldier who kept fighting for 30 years after his country signed its surrender at the end of the Second World War.

This zan-ryū Nippon hei of Subaru is unveiled today at the Tokyo Motor Show and shows once again how STI, the performance division of the firm that takes the Pleiades constellation as its emblem, is able to extract and deliver greater excitement from the brand’s cars.

The Subaru Levorg Prototype STI is built on the new SGP construction platform, which also underpins the new Subaru Levorg unveiled exactly one year ago.

On this occasion, the concept car on display gives a glimpse of the ideal sporting family car for Subaru and STI, and it is none other than a vehicle that combines the best of saloons such as the Subaru WRX STI with the estate bodies that Subaru offered even in compact form with the Impreza, and which the Subaru Levorg brought back for Subaru fans who missed that “ranchera” configuration, as we affectionately call it.

Since Subaru has not released any information about the engine fitted to this prototype, it is reasonable to assume it uses the new 1.8-litre horizontally opposed “boxer” engine, which is more powerful and efficient than the 1.6 it replaces and may also feature some power improvements.

What has been revealed is that this car features a new suspension layout that is electronically controlled. This not only improves comfort in everyday use but also heightens driving emotion thanks to the dynamic contribution this suspension provides.

In this way, together with the Symmetrical All Wheel Drive , the brand’s hallmark, and Drive Mode Select, every journey can be tackled in the most appropriate way, whether enjoying the virtues of a Grand Touring vehicle or the sports cars that have served, and still serve, as the basis for the racing cars that compete at the highest level of international motorsport.

Although this is not the first time Subaru has presented a conceptual proposal based on the Levorg with its STI department, we hope that this new generation will finally deliver a high-performance family car capable of carrying a good number of crates of fresh fruit while its driver enjoys an exciting and fun driving experience.
