The 'Terrain Mode' of the new KIA Sorento makes it the most capable generation
The fourth generation of the KIA Sorento will be more capable than ever thanks to its new driving mode called ‘Terrain’.

The new KIA Sorento features a driving mode called ‘Terrain‘ and everything points to it making the KIA model the most capable generation in its history. Sales of the KIA Sorento will begin in Europe during the second half of this same year, 2020. The manufacturer itself has assured that the new ‘Terrain Mode‘ will offer better traction, stability and control on different types of surfaces such as mud, snow or sand. This will be possible because each mode is designed to perform its function in each scenario.
If we are faithful to what the brand itself has stated, the all-wheel-drive variants of the new KIA Sorento should be more capable than ever. Drivers also have reason to celebrate, since switching between the different driving modes is very easy. The first step is to activate the Select dial on the centre console.

Next, the system automatically optimises the transmission to adapt to each surface, adjusting the power output and torque distribution of the engine, the shift timing, as well as the vehicle’s stability control characteristics. In snow mode, the KIA Sorento’s torque output is limited, while it is spread as evenly as possible between the four wheels. Meanwhile, the traction control system (TCS) applies low levels of braking force to the wheels to optimise traction, and the transmission uses shorter gear changes to prevent wheel slip.

KIA Sorento 2020, the most off-road capable in the model’s history?
In ‘Mud Mode’, the wheels are positioned according to a slightly delayed shift pattern and a softer application of torque, while ‘Sand Mode‘ ensures the highest torque levels are matched with delayed upshifts to prevent the vehicle from getting stuck in finer sand.

Pablo Martínez Masip, executive at KIA Motors in Europe, has stated that “the new KIA Sorento has always been a highly capable vehicle, and the new model demonstrates how KIA has evolved the automobile for the modern era. The first-generation Sorento, launched in 2003, combined all-wheel drive with a robust body-on-frame chassis, which made it solid in all conditions. Seventeen years later, the fourth-generation model uses advanced drivetrain technology to further enhance its capabilities.”
The executive also wanted to add that “the KIA Sorento is now more capable than ever and is designed to give drivers greater confidence and control behind the wheel. The new 2020 model combines intelligent all-wheel drive and a robust monocoque chassis with the new ‘Terrain Mode’ functionality. As a result, it reacts much faster to changing conditions and allows drivers to enjoy easier progress.”
