The Top10 of SUV sales in Spain in 2017

SUV sales keep rising in the Spanish market, and they will continue to do so throughout 2018, a year in which many new models will arrive in this segment. These have been the 10 best-selling SUVs in Spain in 2017

During 2017, a total of 1,234,931 vehicles were sold in the Spanish market, according to data from the manufacturers’ association Anfac. This figure represents a 7.7 percent increase over the previous year. And if we look at the breakdown by category, once again the growth of SUVs stands out above all others: sales of SUVs and off-roaders now total almost 36 percent of all vehicles sold in Spain during 2017.

To give you an idea: city cars (the category led by the Seat Ibiza) remain the best-selling cars, totalling 289,512 units, an increase of 3.7 percent compared with 2016. They are followed by compact cars (where the “King” is the Seat León), which grew 0.3% to reach 273,820 units. Can you guess which category is third in the sales ranking? You got it: mid-size SUVs, with growth of more than 26 percent, reaching 239,000 units. And the advance of small SUVs continues as new competitors arrive on the market: with an increase of almost 20 percent, they place fourth in sales volume, totalling 145,334 units.

The prominence of SUVs will continue during 2018. Meanwhile, let’s review the Top10 in sales of last year: here you have the best-selling SUVs in Spain over the twelve months of 2017, although some prefer to call them crossovers or crossovers.

The Top10 of the best-selling SUVs in Spain in 2017

  1. Nissan Qashqai
  2. Hyundai Tucson
  3. Renault Captur
  4. Peugeot 2008
  5. Seat Ateca
  6. Opel Mokka X
  7. Kia Sportage
  8. Volkswagen Tiguan
  9. Peugeot 3008
  10. Renault Kadjar

As a figure worth noting, besides the undisputed leadership of the Nissan Qashqai, two mid-size SUVs have already “sneaked” into the top five: the Renault Captur –which is built exclusively in Spain for the whole world– and the Peugeot 2008. This is a segment that will keep growing, with the arrival of new models such as the Hyundai Kona, the Kia Stonic or the Volkswagen T-Roc, among others. Just as mid-size SUVs once began to be considered an alternative (on price, size and versatility) to both saloons and MPVs, small SUVs are now gaining ground on traditional compact cars for the same reasons.

And what happens beyond 10th place? Well, if we extended the list, keeping the order, closely following the Renault Kadjar would be the Dacia Duster, which will soon make way for the new Duster 2018, followed by the Ford Kuga, the BMW X1, the Nissan Juke and the surprising Toyota C-HR, which deserves credit for reaching such high positions (more than 10,800 units registered) when only a single mechanical version is sold, which also uses a hybrid propulsion system. Closing the list up to the top 20 would be the Fiat 500X, the Mercedes GLA, the Toyota Rav4, the Audi Q3 and the Nissan X-Trail.
