The total number of deaths on Spanish roads in 2011 amounts to 1,479 people

According to the official road accident balance on our roads, a total of 1,479 people died as a result of traffic accidents during the past year. This represents, according to the Minister of the Interior, Jorge Fernández Díaz, a decrease of 14.5%.

This data means a reduction of 250 deaths compared with the year we have just left behind and achieving, for the first time in 50 years, fewer than 1,500 lives lost. However, this should not end here, as many families continue to suffer and, on numerous occasions, due to accidents that could have been avoided.

For this reason, many institutions such as RACE urge the government to introduce less punitive measures and to focus more on building a social awareness by informing people of the number of fatalities and their causes. In addition, they call for continued promotion of prevention measures such as educational or training campaigns.

All of this is aimed at reducing as much as possible the number of accidents and deaths in Spain. And as a model to follow, we have Sweden, where this year’s goal is zero road deaths, an objective that is unfortunately difficult to achieve but which we can certainly move closer to, given that this country had only “270” deaths in 2010.
