The Toyota GR Corolla could become a reality in the United States

Toyota could be working on a Toyota GR Corolla for the American market, where the beloved Toyota GR Yaris is not sold.

The world has been left stunned by the arrival of the indomitable Toyota GR Yaris, a sporty city car that showcases the virtues of a rally car while being adapted to be driven on public roads. It has been a long time since the automotive industry last “gifted” us something similar, and it is no surprise that it has caused a sensation. However, the United States cannot enjoy the latest revolution from Toyota, but it seems they are going to do something about it.

And so, on the other side of the pond they did not want to be left without their dose of automotive fun, which is why Toyota USA is going to take action. For now, the company has neither confirmed nor denied anything, but a statement issued through its official website hints that something with the GR name will arrive on American soil.

In it, we can read that “since the Toyota GR Yaris is not going to reach the United States, it is time for us to have a sporty compact thanks to Gazoo Racing.” This sentence allows us to consider that the Japanese company is working on something just as innovative as the GR Yaris but in a different format, which leads us to believe that the chosen one will be the Toyota Corolla, a model that already showed signs of sportiness with the GR-Sport trim.

In this way, Toyota would be developing a vehicle capable of competing directly with models such as the Volkswagen Golf GTI, Ford Focus ST or Hyundai i30 N. To do so, it will make use of a spicier design and, above all, of mechanical elements taken directly from the Toyota GR Yaris. With this premise, we can expect a GR Corolla that is considerably more radical than its most direct rivals.

This would be possible thanks to a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine capable of delivering a power output close to 260 CV. In addition, a manual gearbox is expected instead of the CVT of the standard model, and a GR-Four all-wheel-drive system capable of distributing power differently depending on the selected driving mode.

For now, neither Toyota Global nor Toyota USA have provided more information on the matter, but everything points to this sporty compact materialising sooner or later. In this way, the Japanese company is adding fuel to the fire in a war that is becoming increasingly intense and interesting.
