The Volkswagen California T7 hits the market as a great option for leisure time

One of the great pleasures we have is being able to enjoy leisure time while camping. For this reason, camper vehicles have become very popular, and many variants of this type of vehicle can be found from various brands. However, one of the most popular is the Volkswagen California, which has now been updated with its variant based on the Multivan T7.

This model entered the market in 1988, so it is no surprise that 280,000 units have been registered over all these years. Something important about this new version is that it is based on the MQB platform of the brand, which also underpins models such as the Golf and other models from the brand. This allows it to offer more effective interior flexibility and more practical handling, as if it were a passenger car and not a commercial vehicle.

Second side door

The dimensions of the new California are 5.17 metres in length and 1.94 metres in width. The height is 1.97 metres, below the two metres that would prevent it from parking in many underground car parks. The wheelbase is 3.12 metres, which allows for a comfortable interior space.

A second sliding door has been incorporated, which allows greater accessibility from both sides. Depending on the trim level chosen, the rear rows of seats can rotate up to 180º, so that they create a social space, a space for dining or living. There is also, optionally, a side awning that can be fitted on either side, improving customisation.

As for passenger capacity, versions for four, five and six passengers will be available. The difference in space in each variant changes the configuration of the rear area. In the highest-equipment version, a gas hob and a fridge can be found. A battery will power this appliance and other electrical elements needed in the space.

All the elements can be controlled through a five-inch screen placed on the C-pillar or through an app available on users’ smartphones.

There are two beds available, one inside and one in the roof. The roof can be lowered with electric motors and allows standing room at the rear.

Engines

As for the available engines, there is an entry-level version with a 2.0 TDI diesel engine producing 150 CV. This engine is coupled to a DSG automatic gearbox with steering-wheel paddles. In early 2025 a plug-in hybrid version will be launched. This version will have two electric motors and offer a total output of 254 CV. Its range will be 100 km, so it will be quite practical for driving in fully electric mode.

Four versions

There are four versions available of the Volkswagen California T7. The first is the Beach version. It can carry six people and has a roof bed. The next option is the Beach Tour, which offers five seats and independent heating in the rear area. The third variant is called Beach Camper and features a fold-out kitchen at the rear. The last option is called Ocean and is the most camper-equipped of all, with a kitchen, fridge and rear control screen.

Prices start at 66,340 euros and go up to 85,270 euros, depending on the trim level chosen.
