Spain will continue to be a benchmark country for the Volkswagen Group, which has announced new investments to boost its productive potential in our country. Between 2015 and 2019, the group’s investment in Spain will amount to €4.2 billion, a very significant figure that guarantees the continuity of the brand’s Spanish factories.

Francisco José García Sanz, the group’s global vice president of purchasing for Volkswagen and chairman of the board of directors of Seat, announced the Volkswagen plans at a meeting with Mariano Rajoy. In his words, this investment will be used for improvements to facilities and machinery, R&D and innovation, and not only to maintain current workforces but also to hire new employees and generate more business volume in the supplier industry, because the Landaben (Navarra) and Martorell plants must prepare for the production of new models.

The Volkswagen factories in Spain produce around 750,000 vehicles a year, and more than 20,000 people work in the group’s various companies. In Navarra they focus on producing the Volkswagen Polo, but they will have to prepare for a new model that has not yet been confirmed. In Martorell they manufacture other models such as the Audi Q3, Seat Ibiza, Seat León and the Seat Altea, although the latter will soon cease production, making room for new models.

The investment is historic and represents a boost for the sector, whose figures have been affected, since it is estimated that over the last four years around €3.5 billion had been invested in the entire Spanish automotive industry, and now a single group announces an investment that exceeds that figure.
