The Volvo XC90 will return with a third generation featuring changes and surprises
The Volvo XC90 could have a new life, even though a fully electric version exists, and it will have a third generation with a plug-in hybrid engine.

The Volvo XC90 is being prepared to be replaced by an electric model, and that seemed to seal the fate of the model definitively. But apparently, from the office of the CEO of Volvo, Hakan Samuelsson, they are willing to give the model a new opportunity, offering a new generation of the Volvo XC90. The current generation has been on the market for 10 years and, according to the CEO, it is time for a new generation.
What they have not offered is a launch date, so we will have to wait a little to find out what this new generation of the Swedish model can offer us. The powertrain that this new variant of the Volvo XC90 will use has been revealed, however.

It is expected that under the bonnet we will find a powertrain similar to the one used in the announced XC70, which will arrive in China soon. The plug-in hybrid drive system. The reasoning behind this type of propulsion is that the transition to pure electric cars has slowed down and will still take quite a while to become fully effective.
If we look at the XC70, we will have several types of batteries. The largest of them has a capacity of 40 kWh, which offers a range of up to 180 kilometres in fully electric mode. With this battery, much larger than the one offered by the Volvo XC90 T8, which has only 18.8 kWh and offers a range of just 71 kilometres.

With this higher-performance configuration, the consumption of the Volvo XC90 is set to drop considerably and it will be able to stay on the market longer than planned. What we do not know is the platform that will serve as the basis for this new generation of the model. The current one is based on the SPA platform, which is already obsolete.
There are several options that could be used to shape this third generation. Among them is the SMA (Scalable Modular Architecture), which the XC70 already uses. Another option would be a variant of the SPA2 platform, used in the electric EX90, and even the SPA3, if adapted to use combustion engines.
Let us recall that Volvo’s intention was for vehicles with combustion engines to disappear from the brand’s range by 2030, but significant changes have occurred that will delay these plans and have rendered them obsolete.
