This is the new Toyota Yaris 2020: a total commitment to hybrid technology

In mid-2020 the fourth generation of the Toyota Yaris will go on sale, and in Spain it will be offered only with a hybrid version that is more powerful and efficient than the current model.

Plenty of news for the fourth generation of the Toyota Yaris, which will be in dealerships next summer. To begin with, it debuts a new platform called TNGA-B. It is a variant of the TNGA-C platform for compact cars, which Toyota is used in the current Prius, Corolla and C-HR.

Here you can read a buying guide to the new Toyota Corolla, and here we tell you about the news on the 2020 Toyota C-HR. Above it sits the TNGA-K platform, which is used for the larger cars, the new Camry and the Rav4.

This platform brings advantages in terms of greater rigidity and lower weight and, in the case of the Yaris, a wheelbase 50 mm longer. Thanks to this, the interior of the new Yaris does not suffer in terms of space, even though the bodywork is 40 mm lower and 5 mm shorter externally.

One novelty is that, as some of its rivals are also doing, Toyota is also dropping the 3-door bodywork in this category, and the Yaris will be offered only with five doors.

Neither diesel nor petrol, only the hybrid version

At least at launch – what demand establishes in the future will be another matter – there will also be no option to choose diesel or petrol engines on the Spanish market. However, in other markets they will be offered from the start with 1.0 and 1.5 three-cylinder petrol engines.

The new Toyota Yaris Hybrid also arrives loaded with mechanical novelties. The new hybrid system is called Dynamic Force, and is based on a 1.5-litre three-cylinder direct-injection petrol engine operating on the Atkinson cycle. The current Yaris also has a 1.5, but with port injection and four cylinders.

This new engine promises a thermal efficiency of 40%, more typical of diesel engines than petrol ones, thanks to a very efficient combustion process. Toyota does not confirm performance figures, but it does announce a 20 percent reduction in emissions and consumption, with 15 percent more system power. This would mean the new Yaris Hybrid reaches around 115 CV.

Another of the most important novelties for achieving this efficiency gain is the new battery, which is more powerful, 27 percent lighter, and lithium-ion instead of nickel-metal hydride.

Completely redesigned interior

Toyota has also completely redesigned the Yaris dashboard, which now features an 8-inch touchscreen in a floating, very high position.

It offers compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and will come as standard with the Safety Sense package from Toyota, which groups together the most important safety elements, such as the emergency braking assist, active cruise control, automatic lights, lane-keeping assist, traffic sign recognition system and automatic lights.

As a first in the category, the Yaris will debut a new centre airbag, designed to better protect occupants in the event of a side impact.
