Summer is here and with it comes one of the world’s most important sporting events, one that never fails to meet cycling fans every year. This is, of course, the Tour de France. Every year we see the hard-fighting cyclists accompanied by several cars, some of which we have been talking about throughout the year, and this 2017 edition is no exception. Three teams taking part in this demanding cycling race have chosen the ŠKODA Karoq as their support vehicle.

These are three units of this new compact SUV from the Czech brand, which will carry out support duties for the athletes and have therefore been equipped with everything needed to fulfil this important function throughout the race. Team Division Data from South Africa, Team Lotto NL – Jumbo from the Netherlands and Belgium’s Lotto Soudal are the teams that use the Karoq as a store of spare parts and as transport for the support team, which stays in constant contact with the cyclists.

All three are painted in each team’s colours: the Team Division Data car has a black, green and red body, the Lotto NL – Jumbo team’s car is yellow and black, and finally the Belgian team’s car features a red and white design. On the roof, all three compact SUVs carry the same slogan: RIDE ON WITH #KAROQ.

The choice of this model as support car for the cycling teams took into account the SUV’s technical equipment. The 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox or the six-speed manual, together with the possibility of selecting three driving modes and the electromechanical power steering, allow it to be as agile and efficient as the cyclists themselves. On the market, this crossover is offered with five engines with power outputs ranging from 115 CV to 190 CV.

ŠKODA’s relationship with the Tour de France goes back a long way, since the brand originally manufactured bicycles, and the link between the French race and the Czech brand means that there are more than 250 ŠKODA cars in the organisation, in escort services and service vehicles, which will cover a total of around 2.8 million kilometres over the 23 days the race lasts.
