Top 7 SUVs with the most effective intelligent collision-avoidance and autonomous emergency braking systems in Spain
Technical ranking of the seven SUVs with the most advanced AEB and ADAS systems on the Spanish market, evaluated according to Euro NCAP and real-world detection capability.
Active safety has stopped being a brochure claim and has become the real technological battleground between premium and mainstream manufacturers. Since the General Safety Regulation GSR2 came into force in July 2024, every new vehicle type-approved in the European Union must integrate, as a minimum, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance and driver drowsiness detection. But between the legal minimum and excellence there is a considerable gap, and that is where the best SUVs with intelligent collision-avoidance systems make the difference.
This ranking analyses the seven SUVs sold in Spain with the most effective autonomous emergency braking systems, using as reference the Euro NCAP 2023-2024 protocols, the real detection capability for pedestrians, cyclists and junctions, and the degree of integration with the rest of the ADAS package.
What Euro NCAP actually measures in a modern AEB
Current Euro NCAP tests assess AEB in Car-to-Car scenarios (frontal, rear and approaching vehicles), Vulnerable Road Users (adult and child pedestrians, cyclists crossing and in parallel) and, since 2023, junctions with left-hand turns. An SUV aiming for five stars needs to exceed 80% in Safety Assist and 75% in Vulnerable Road Users. All seven models in this ranking achieve this comfortably.
1. Volvo XC60 — from €66,450
The XC60 remains the absolute benchmark in active safety. Its City Safety system integrates autonomous braking with detection of pedestrians, cyclists, large animals and crossing vehicles at speeds of up to 60 km/h, with full mitigation below 45 km/h. It adds assisted evasive steering, something very few rivals offer as standard. In its latest Euro NCAP test it scored 97% for adult occupant protection and 87% in Safety Assist.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 246 | 335 | 180 km/h | 79 km electric | 2.7 l/100 km | PHEV |
Mercedes-Benz GLC2. Mercedes-Benz GLC — from €59,954
The GLC fits the Driving Assistance Package Plus, with predictive AEB able to read complex junctions, motorcycle detection and emergency braking with assisted evasion up to 100 km/h. Its long-range frontal radar and stereoscopic cameras recognise pedestrians crossing in low-light conditions with remarkable reliability.
| Power kW | Power CV | Top speed | Range | Consumption | Label | Fuel |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 150 | 204 | 221 km/h | — | 7.0 l/100 km | ECO | Hybrid |
BMW X33. BMW X3 — from €65,850
The new X3 debuts the Driving Assistant Professional with reinforced autonomous braking at junctions and active side detection. The 8 MP front camera and five perimeter radars make it possible to anticipate collisions even during lane-change manoeuvres. Euro NCAP placed it above 90% in Safety Assist.
| Power kW | Power CV | Top speed | Range | Consumption | Label | Fuel |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 153 | 208 | 215 km/h | — | 7.6 l/100 km | ECO | Hybrid |

4. Audi Q5 — from €63,050
Audi Pre Sense Front brakes autonomously up to 85 km/h with pedestrian and cyclist detection, and Pre Sense Basic tightens seatbelts and closes windows when a collision is imminent. The turn-assist function prevents run-overs when pulling away at urban junctions, especially useful in congested environments.
| Power kW | Power CV | Top speed | Range | Consumption | Label | Fuel |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 150 | 204 | 226 km/h | — | 6.9 l/100 km | ECO | Hybrid |
Toyota RAV45. Toyota RAV4 — from €44,250
Toyota Safety Sense 3 is probably the most complete ADAS package in the mainstream segment. AEB with day and night detection of pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists, recognition of cross traffic at junctions and left-turn assist. The RAV4 earned five Euro NCAP stars with excellent scores for vulnerable road users.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 136 | 185 | 180 km/h | — | 4.5 l/100 km | ECO | Hybrid |
Hyundai Tucson6. Hyundai Tucson — from €30,325
Hyundai SmartSense offers Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with detection of pedestrians, cyclists and crossing vehicles, plus Safe Exit Assist to prevent collisions when leaving the vehicle, a rare feature in this segment. Five Euro NCAP stars and a performance-to-price ratio that is hard to match.
| Power kW | Power CV | Top speed | Range | Consumption | Label | Fuel |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 175 | 239 | 186 km/h | — | 5.6 l/100 km | ECO | Hybrid |
KIA Sportage7. Kia Sportage — from €28,520
The technological sibling of the Tucson, the Sportage features Kia Drive Wise with FCA 2 including cross-traffic detection, active lane-change assistance and AEB in reverse. A package that directly rivals premium brands at half the price.

FAQ
What is an AEB system and how does it differ from adaptive cruise control?
AEB (Autonomous Emergency Braking) is a system that detects an imminent collision and brakes automatically if the driver does not react. Adaptive cruise control, by contrast, maintains distance from the vehicle ahead but is not designed to prevent impacts.
Do all new SUVs sold in Spain have autonomous emergency braking?
Yes. Since July 2024, the GSR2 Regulation requires every vehicle type-approved in the EU to incorporate AEB, although performance (response speed, pedestrian or cyclist detection) varies enormously between brands and models.
Which ADAS system is most effective at detecting pedestrians at night?
Volvo City Safety and Mercedes Driving Assistance Package achieve the best Euro NCAP scores for night-time pedestrian detection, thanks to infrared cameras and long-range radars combined with advanced algorithms.
Is it worth paying for the optional ADAS package on premium brands?
On Audi, BMW and Mercedes, the higher packages (Pre Sense Plus, Driving Assistant Professional, Driving Assistance Package Plus) add features such as automatic lane change, active evasion and AEB at junctions that do justify the extra cost for drivers who cover many kilometres on motorways or in dense urban environments.
