Toyota could be working on an electric car with a manual gearbox

Toyota has filed a series of patents showing that it is working on a manual gearbox for electric cars.

Cambio Manual Para Coche Electrico

The idea of buying an electric car may sound like a horror movie if you are one of those who love manual gearboxes. Well, Toyota wants to convince you and may be working on an electric car with a manual gearbox. As you probably know, in recent times it has become very hard to find a car with a manual gearbox, I mean a car for everyday use. Don’t you think?

The same goes for hybrid cars, which, except for the Honza CRZ, are all automatic. If you want to drive a manual you would have to opt for mild-hybrid models. Don’t worry, because Toyota wants to give you the pleasure of driving an electric car with a manual gearbox.

Toyota may have registered a patent for a manual gearbox

The Japanese brand has registered the document with the United States Patent Application. In it, besides a giant platform of sensors, the manufacturer aims to save the manual gearbox, which could be present in compact, SUV and off-road models and even in the rest of Toyota’s fully electric models. In this way, manual gearboxes will not be available only in high-performance cars.

Patente Toyota

On the specialised forum Toyota bZ, up to eight patent applications can be consulted that describe, perfectly, a system that manages a manual transmission for electric cars capable of simulating the physical pressure of a clutch pedal and the force feedback of a gear lever. It is worth mentioning that the documentation also notes the system’s ability to switch from manual mode to fully electric mode without any kind of gear.

For now, we do not know whether this pseudo manual gearbox for electric cars will be developed from scratch, but what we can predict is that it will offer a very good driving feel. Likewise, we do not know whether this manual gearbox will be standard or whether drivers could choose it as an option with the consequent price increase. You may find it strange, since in recent years brands have bet on automatic gearboxes, but in this industry seeing is believing. Would you switch to an electric car just because it has a manual gearbox? Tell us!
