Toyota could launch a hydrogen saloon in 2015

A few days ago I wrote an article for Plusmoto.com about the different types of eco-friendly fuels available. I focused mainly on electric motors, and also looked a little into biofuels. I have to be honest: I completely forgot about hydrogen. I know why I forgot: I don’t yet consider it efficient. Electricity is needed to produce hydrogen, which makes the process twice as much work.

But that is another subject. Today I want to tell you about the possible hydrogen-powered saloon that Toyota is reportedly thinking of launching in 2015. Yes, in 2015. There are still 36 grapes left to eat… The news was brought to light by the magazine AutoWeek, which offers nothing more than these words, to be honest.

What is true is that Toyota is eager to sell a vehicle powered by a fuel cell. This was announced by Didier Leroy, president of Toyota Motor Europe, who also stressed that, first of all, an important infrastructure is needed to support this type of vehicle.

As I said above, I don’t have much confidence in hydrogen-powered cars. Producing hydrogen is still expensive – it is one of the most abundant elements in the universe but, unfortunately, it is found mainly combined with oxygen, forming water. Moreover, producing it requires electricity, which makes the process longer. The positive side, however, is that since it is transported in liquid state, it is possible to “refuel” the car faster than with electric cars. But, on the other hand, super-fast chargers are advancing, if you’ll pardon the expression, super fast…
