The use of alternative energies to power cars is becoming increasingly dynamic. Renewable sources such as electricity are being adopted, but the way this electricity is produced is also under the spotlight of companies. That is why one of the most anticipated developments is the hydrogen fuel cell, which will power the new Toyota Mirai.

This is the name chosen for the new four-door saloon from the Japanese brand, which will soon be available on the market and which has been the subject of a video starring Akio Toyoda, the company’s president. Mirai is the name chosen for this model, which represents what is coming from this company, and which, precisely, means “Future” in Japanese.

The car will be launched very shortly in the American market and will be one of the flagships of Toyota when it comes to the use of alternative fuels. There is not much information yet on the specifications of the Toyota Mirai, although we will be watching for everything they announce about what this model will offer.

What we know is that the Mirai will be capable of covering around 500 kilometres on a single hydrogen tank, with the particularity that it will emit nothing but water vapour. The advantage of this system over 100% electric cars is that while those need to stay connected to the grid for several hours, those using fuel cell technology need only about five minutes to refuel.

The American market is being prepared to receive this type of vehicle, which will have to compete with the electric range of Tesla, among other brands that have interesting offerings in this field. The refuelling possibilities will increase with the upcoming installation of twelve service stations that will offer the chance to fill the tank on the East Coast.

The price of this car will be set at €69,000, it will be ready throughout 2015 and, as they say in the video, for Toyota it will not be just another car, but the gateway to the future of the automotive industry. We will see how it performs.
