Up to 1000 CV! ABT boosts the power of the RS6 and RS7 LE thanks to its IWI Technology

The world of motoring never ceases to amaze us, and this time it does so courtesy of ABT Sportsline, the vehicle modification giant of the VW Group, which has just launched a revolutionary technology for the RS 6 and RS 7 Legacy Edition models which, as if their incredible performance weren’t enough, wait until you see what they have just done. These impressive vehicles have been equipped with 4.0-litre twin-turbo engines producing 820 CV, and can now reach the astonishing figure of 1,000 CV thanks to the innovative IWI system, an indirect water/ethanol injection that promises to take performance to new heights and which, combined with the incredible design of the four-ring brand, gives rise to a beast like the one we present to you below.

The power of IWI Technology

IWI, which stands for Water/Ethanol Injection, is the heart behind this work of art. We already saw how they managed to take the RS7 up to 760 CV, but it seems that enthusiasts of the brand found this to be a little too modest. Later, they increased the incredible RS3 to 460 CV, something we also covered recently. The system is strategically located in front of the engine’s two throttle valves and is controlled by a state-of-the-art electronic unit developed specifically for this purpose by ABT Sportsline.

What makes ethanol the perfect choice for this injection is its availability and its excellent physical properties. According to Thomas Biermaier, CEO of ABT Sportsline, “IWI technology gives us thermodynamic advantages that allow more sustainable performance in these high-performance areas. Through IWI injection, we ensure an extremely effective internal cooling of the engine, which allows more air and oxygen to be supplied to the engine, resulting in consistently superior performance.”

Activating the power at the touch of a button

The IWI system is easily activated via the RS buttons on the steering wheel of the RS 6 LE and RS 7 LE. Holding the RS button down for one second in either of the two RS modes activates the additional power, which is ready to be unleashed at any moment. This means that every time the driver presses the accelerator pedal, the vehicle will respond with its maximum performance.

To achieve the impressive figure of 1,000 CV, ABT Sportsline has made a series of improvements to the engine components. These include:

• Carbon fibre intake system with enlarged turbo air intakes
• Optimised turbochargers
• Special intercoolers with enlarged air inlets in the front apron
• Forged pistons with reduced compression
• Reinforced connecting rods and piston pins
• Sports catalytic converter with petrol particulate filter
• Exhaust system and additional oil coolers

Sustainability in the Tank

The indirect water/ethanol injection is fed from a 15-litre reservoir located in the boot. The ABT IWI fluid filler neck is conveniently located beneath the standard fuel filler cap. With a full tank, it is possible to cover up to 3,000 kilometres, which equates to a consumption of just 0.5 litres per 100 kilometres. A level sensor constantly monitors the fluid level and displays this information in the myABT app or in the MMI via Apple CarPlay. In addition, the app allows you to conveniently order the required ABT IWI fluid, as well as providing a wealth of performance data and system status.
