BMW is pressing ahead with development of the new BMW 2 Series, a model that has already been caught on video showing an advanced stage of development.

BMW has tackled the renewal of some of its most important models in recent years, such as the 1 Series, the 3 Series and the controversial 4 Series. However, it seems the 2 Series was left on the drawing board, a model of which, to date, only a Gran Coupé version has been presented. But things are about to change for the German sports car, since its next generation has already been spotted running in camouflage, but at a fairly advanced stage of development.

And the BMW 2 Series 2022 is just around the corner and ready to impose on its predecessor all the innovations that its other siblings in the range have brought. With this premise, a second generation is expected that is not only more technological, but also more modern and sporty than ever.

For now, BMW maintains a deafening silence on the matter, preventing anything beyond images and videos like the one we feature today from leaking out. However, significant aesthetic novelties are expected that will introduce the new 2 Series to the brand’s latest design language, which could mean we see important novelties reflected in it, such as the grille of the current 4 Series or a rear end with a drop-down shape and taillights inherited from the 8 Series.

As far as engines are concerned, a generous range of powertrains is expected, featuring both diesel and petrol units. Further down the line, a PHEV version is expected to arrive and, of course, its corresponding M-badged variants. The new BMW 2 Series will continue to use the M235i and M2 designations.

In the case of the former, it is expected to keep using a 3.0-litre straight-six engine capable of producing just over 350 CV. In the case of the BMW M2 2022, everything points to a newly developed turbocharged six-cylinder engine capable of raising total power to 420 CV. At the same time, an intelligent M xDrive all-wheel-drive system is also expected, as well as a rear-wheel-drive-only version.

Be that as it may, it will be throughout this year, 2021, that we will get our first look at, at least, the BMW 2 Series. In this way, BMW would already have fully renewed its model range, which will soon receive the long-awaited i4 and more versions of the 4 Series family.
