Volkswagen has big plans for the Polo facelift

The fifth generation of the German city car is still relatively new, having just turned two years old on the market. However, Volkswagen is already working on the update that in 2013 will bring to the car that was “European Car of the Year” in 2010. Although it still will not include an R version above the GTI, there will be major news in its range, according to the German magazine Autobild.
A logical facelift that brings it a little closer to the design that the brand’s products from Wolfsburg will have by then, giving it sharper features, would be accompanied by a real proliferation of body styles complementing the two-box three- and five-door version.

What is known so far is about the estate, a variant not offered on the Polo since its third generation back in the 90s, which we knew as the Seat Córdoba Vario. Autobild reports that the new Polo Variant, whose lines can be anticipated from the Seat Ibiza ST and the Škoda Fabia Combi, will have a longer wheelbase than the conventional body and a rear end with a distinct look.
The German publication even dares to bet on a starting price for this new Polo of 13,500 euros in that country, that is, more than 1,000 euros above the Spanish twin and just over 2,000 compared with the Czech one, which is to be expected. Likewise, the estate would also give rise to a commercial version, much more capable than if that derivative had come from the regular Polo, which will also spawn a mini-SUV and another body style with a coupé-like design.
Although Volkswagen has accustomed us to product overlaps, we shouldn’t rush to judge the reception of the Polo Variant, because the story may well repeat itself, and with the Seat and the Škoda in Spain we already have more than enough.
