The electric successor to the Volkswagen Passat will be produced at the Emden plant in Germany.

The German brand has unveiled the name of the next member of its electrified family. We’re talking about the Volkswagen ID.7, which the brand showed during the CES in Las Vegas. Volkswagen presented a concept with digital camouflage ahead of the presentation that will take place later on.

The Volkswagen ID.7 is based on the concept called ID.Aero: a large saloon with a coupé-style body and a firm commitment to aerodynamics. It measures 4.94 metres in length, roughly the same length as a Tesla Model S, and has a wheelbase of 2.96 metres. Its height is 1.52 metres, which makes it taller than most saloons. For now, the manufacturer has not published technical specifications for the ID.7 concept, but it is built on Volkswagen’s MEB platform.

Everything we know about the Volkswagen ID.7

The new all-electric Volkswagen model may come with a 90 kWh battery pack that promises a range of around 700 kilometres on a single charge under the WLTP test cycle. The brand has also not confirmed the drivetrain configuration, although we expect rear-motor and dual-motor versions.

While this special version for the CES may look very similar to the production car, some of the body details of the Volkswagen ID.7 may actually be a bit challenging to make out. In addition to being presented in “smart camouflage,” the concept uses a 40-layer pearlescent paint that creates its own light and depth effects across the surface of the vehicle, through real electroluminescent layers.

The German manufacturer has also offered a preview of what appears to be an update to its interiors, as it features a new concept with a larger screen of up to 10.5 inches and an augmented reality display. It is worth mentioning that the climate controls are integrated into the top of the infotainment system.

The new German saloon will be sold in Europe, China and the United States, and will be produced at the Emden plant in Germany.
