Volkswagen is negotiating with the US a payment of $4.3 billion over the emissions scandal

Volkswagen is in negotiations with US authorities over the emissions scandal that affected 11 million vehicles worldwide and 600,000 in the US. The notorious fraudulent device was installed in 555,000 vehicles Volkswagen, designed to detect when they were being subjected to emissions testing.
The dieselgate scandal in the United States affected a total of 600,000 cars. The VAG Group faces criminal and civil fines. According to the agreement in principle, the penalties could amount to $4.3 billion (4.1 billion euros). This high figure exceeds current provisions of the car company, so its payment will need to be authorised by the group’s supervisory board. Volkswagen has not yet determined the economic impact this penalty will have on the brand’s annual result; the company says it “depends on several additional factors”.

In addition to the financial fine, a series of measures are being negotiated to strengthen compliance systems and emissions control, including the appointment of an independent monitor for Volkswagen over the next three years.
The final conclusion of the agreement is subject to approval by the US Board of Directors, the Supervisory Board of Volkswagen AG and the competent US courts. This resolution could be very close, possibly becoming official today or tomorrow.
